The House That Waited For Us
There’s a house on the edge of the old wide land
Like it rose from the lines in my father’s hands
Crooked porch, little light, and a door left warm
Like it knew I was coming through every storm
All my life I was chasing some far-off flame
Now the silence out here calls me by my name
And the miles I wore down in my boots and skin
Led me back to the place that had always been
The house didn’t move, the years did
Love didn’t leave, we just lived
Now the whole long road fits in one view
This sky, this chair, these hands, this truth
We were never late, we were just worn through
Till grace came down like the evening blue
And all that time we thought we’d lost
Was waiting here to call us home
There’s an old cup of coffee, your coat on the chair
A sleepy old dog and the cool night air
And your hand in mine like a final psalm
All the hard years turning soft and warm
We don’t need much now, just the stars and space
A little strange house and a mercy of grace
No crowd, no clock, no need to run
Just the prairie breathing with the setting sun
Every gray hair is a road we survived
Every scar says we were fully alive
And if this is the last sweet light we see
It looks like heaven looked for me
The house didn’t move, the years did
Love didn’t leave, we just lived
Now the whole long road fits in one view
This sky, this chair, these hands, this truth
We were never late, we were just worn through
Till grace came down like the evening blue
And all that time we thought we’d lost
Was waiting here to call us home
The house didn’t move
The years did
