A Little Strange Looks Good On Me

My sister took one look at me and said,
"Isn't that a little… strange?"
I said, honey…
that's the whole idea.

A little strange…
(good on me)
A little strange…
(good on me)

I wore the beige that matched the room,
sensible shoes and a quiet perfume.
Forty years of "that'll do,"
matching the curtains, matching the pew.
Nobody made me play it small,
I just got good at matching the wall.

Then a coat in a window caught my eye,
crooked collar, sleeves a little high.
I tried it on and the mirror grinned,
I looked more like me than I'd ever been.

A little strange looks good on me!
(good on me!)
Not everybody's cup of tea!
(that's all right!)
Half my life I tried to fit the mold,
now I only wear what fits my soul.
A little strange looks good on me!
(good on me!)

Too much? NOT ENOUGH!
Too loud? TURN IT UP!
Make a ring, make a ring! HEY!
All the strange ones, dance with me!

Here comes a man in a velvet cape,
a friend in a hat of the strangest shape,
one wears the moon on a satin sleeve,
one's got a laugh you would not believe.
None of us match, and nobody minds,
we're the most beautiful mismatched kind.

Nobody planned it, nobody tried,
we just stopped keeping the good stuff inside.
Maybe the colors weren't changing me,
maybe they were letting me be.

A little strange looks good on me!
(good on me!)
Not everybody's cup of tea!
(that's all right!)
Half my life I tried to fit the mold,
now I only wear what fits my soul.
A little strange looks good on me!
(good on me!)

Too much? NOT ENOUGH!
Too loud? TURN IT UP!
Make a ring, make a ring! HEY!
All the strange ones, dance with me!

I was good at normal.
Real good.
Never missed a step.
But normal never once
asked me to dance.

So I asked myself…

AND I SAID YES!

A little strange looks good on us!
(good on us!)
Not everybody's cup of tea!
(that's all right!)
Half our lives we tried to fit the mold,
now we only wear what fits our soul.
A little strange looks good on me!
(good on me!)

Too much? NOT ENOUGH!
Too loud? TURN IT UP!
Make a ring… make a ring…

My sister bought the same coat last week.
…Took her long enough.
